Alors qu\u2019on venait \u00e0 peine de dig\u00e9rer l\u2019excellent <em>Wall of Eyes<\/em>, The Smile offre sur un plateau d\u2019argent le tout aussi excellent <em>Cutouts<\/em>, seulement neuf mois apr\u00e8s son deuxi\u00e8me effort. Les morceaux de ce deuxi\u00e8me et de ce troisi\u00e8me album sign\u00e9s Yorke, Greenwood et Skinner proviennent de la m\u00eame session d\u2019enregistrement. Et pourtant, l\u2019ensemble de <em>Cutouts <\/em>ne laisse pas penser \u00e0 des <em>B-sides<\/em> qui n\u2019auraient pas d\u00fb sortir des vieux tiroirs (ce qui renvoie in\u00e9vitablement \u00e0 l\u2019exercice similaire pratiqu\u00e9 par Radiohead, en 2001, avec <em>Amnesiac<\/em>, pratiquement aussi bon que son intime conjoint <em>Kid A<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\"><em>Foreign Spies <\/em>ouvre la galette dans une ambiance nostalgique et planante, teint\u00e9e de claviers r\u00e9tros et languissants, comme un \u00e9cho, tandis qu\u2019<em>Instant Psalm <\/em>et son folk-\u00e9lectro \u00e9th\u00e9r\u00e9 ponctu\u00e9 d\u2019instruments de musique classique confirme la veine douce de l\u2019introduction de <em>Cutouts<\/em>. Veine directement rompue par la batterie syncop\u00e9e de Tom Skinner sur la tr\u00e8s jazz <em>Zero Sum<\/em>, bien plus audacieuse et rythm\u00e9e que les deux premi\u00e8res chansons du projet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Facile de comprendre que The Smile, encore une fois, ne s\u2019impose pas de limites en composant, le trio parvenant \u00e0 concilier brillamment l\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation \u00e0 l\u2019accessibilit\u00e9 pour le grand public. The Smile, ce sont trois virtuoses en qu\u00eate de nouveaut\u00e9, en qu\u00eate de frisson, jouant avant tout pour s\u2019amuser et amuser la galerie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">La forme olympique du trio r\u00e9jouit, mais \u00e0 la fois, pas compl\u00e8tement : avec un troisi\u00e8me album en moins de trois ans, Thom Yorke et Jonny Greenwood semblent alors d\u00e9laisser tranquillement Radiohead au profit de The Smile, transformant peu \u00e0 peu leur projet parall\u00e8le en une pr\u00e9occupation num\u00e9ro un (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/thom-yorke-radiohead-reunion-interview-1235139851\/\">les propos tenus r\u00e9cemment par Yorke abondent dans ce sens<\/a>). C\u2019est compr\u00e9hensible, la t\u00eate cr\u00e9ative de Radiohead veut aller voir ailleurs, toucher \u00e0 de nouveaux horizons, mais \u00e0 la fois, \u00e7a donne un go\u00fbt quelque peu amer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">The Smile est, d\u2019un avis personnel, l\u2019un des meilleurs groupes sur Terre \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle, ne vous m\u00e9prenez pas. Sa discographie est pour l\u2019instant sans faille. Mais Radiohead, c\u2019est Radiohead.
