In fact, almost nothing (we don&#8217;t even know her first name!). Mademoiselle Duval was the daughter of a ballet dancer and an archbishop (yes, past ecclesiastical lifestyle often turned out to be surprising&#8230;). Above all, we know that forty years after \u00c9lizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, she was the second woman to have an opera written by her premiered at the Acad\u00e9mie royale de musique (in 1732). Much the same thing happened to this opera as to that of her predecessor (<a href=\"https:\/\/panm360.com\/en\/records\/reinoud-van-mechelen-a-nocte-temporis-choeur-de-chambre-de-namur-elisabeth-jacquet-de-la-guerre-cephale-et-procris-chateau-versailles-baroque-opera\/\"><em>C\u00e9phale et Procris<\/em>, which you can read my review of here<\/a>): it was performed a few times, then forgotten until the present day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This recording on the Ch\u00e2teau de Versailles label, which specialises in this kind of resurrection, is therefore a wonderful opportunity to make contact with a rare baroque opera written by a woman.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Les G\u00e9nies de Mademoiselle Duval par Camille Delaforge et son ensemble Il Caravaggio\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pW6C75LJQNo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the work was first performed in 1732, at the very beginning of the Ramist musical revolution (initiated by Jean-Philippe Rameau), its stylistic influence has left no trace. Instead, we are in a Lullist world (Jean-Baptiste Lully), already half a century old, or perhaps post-Lullist (Andr\u00e9 Campra and his conservative style in this first third of the 18th century spring to mind). That said, we certainly won&#8217;t deny ourselves the honest pleasure of this lovely discovery, full of endearing melodies, well-drawn arias, energetic instrumental portions and ample, generous choruses. Miss Duval knew what she was doing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Les G\u00e9nies <\/em>(The Spirits)<em> <\/em>is a comedy-ballet of the sort often performed at the time, including Rameau&#8217;s <em>Les Indes galantes<\/em>. Based on the same principle as <em>Les Indes galantes<\/em>,<em> Les G\u00e9nies<\/em> is divided into five parts, a Prologue and four Acts (known here as Entr\u00e9es). Each part develops a plot that is different from, but complementary to, the others, with a central theme (love) that serves as a general thread. In <em>Les G\u00e9nies<\/em>, we visit the magical worlds of the four natural elements: earth, water, air and fire. In these, spirits associated with these supernatural worlds experience sentimental adventures linked to character traits associated with these elements. You get the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the musical style is resolutely conservative for its time, it is nevertheless very skilfully mastered by the composer. Lively, Italianate melodies rub shoulders with delicate arias and vigorous use of the bass strings, lending an interesting muscularity to certain passages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quebec&#8217;s Florie Valiquette takes on one of the main roles, that of Love, and does a superb job of it. Her soprano is appropriately powerful, but remains luminous and positive. She is surrounded by other soloists in fine form, including Marie Perbost, in several decisive roles magnified by her dramatic determination coupled with an agile timbre, and \u00c9tienne de B\u00e9naz\u00e9, a very handsome tenor who is racy and sunny, without the nasal flare too often associated with the French tenor of the period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Il Caravaggio ensemble is conducted with precision and ebullience by Camille Delaforge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another fine discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cast<\/span>:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marie Perbost &#8211; Lucile, Za\u00efre, Ism\u00e9nide, Florise<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Florie Valiquette &#8211; Amour, Zamide, a Sylphide<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anna Reinhold &#8211; The Principal Nymph, Pircaride<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Etienne de B\u00e9naz\u00e9 &#8211; L\u00e9andre<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paco Garcia &#8211; An Indian, a Sylph<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guilhem Worms &#8211; Zoroaster, Numapire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthieu Walendzik &#8211; Zerbin, Adolphe<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u00e9cile Achille &#8211; The African, a Nymph<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?si=wMeZPAUHXjD73VZt&amp;list=OLAK5uy_n6aOPOvAsppLvMT03-gmHa-mRD3bfM32Y\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We don&#8217;t know much about her.
