He worked for it, the proof being his four albums, including one with Koriass. Under cover of playful lyrics and catchy melodic beats, he tackles delicate themes. <em>Grignotines de luxe<\/em>, a 12-track album that\u2019s a sequel to the EP released a few weeks ago, gives pride of place to singing, brass, and guitar, and reveals structures close to pop and chanson. PAN M 360 spoke with FouKi about his record, a work without hang-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PAN M 360:<\/strong> You say that <em>Grignotines de luxe<\/em> is your most accomplished album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FouKi:<\/strong> First of all, on the production side, we looked for more instruments, then also on the lyrical side, there\u2019s like a guideline to the album, more than with the previous ones, which were maybe a bit more collections of songs. This time I started with three or four songs, and then I built around them. It\u2019s been a long time since I\u2019ve got the feels, as you might say. Sometimes I listen to <em>Bijou<\/em> again and, I still get shivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PAN M 360:<\/strong> It\u2019s obvious that the common thread is food, can you tell me more about that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FouKi:<\/strong> It\u2019s not necessarily just like, \u201cyou have to eat, go ahead, eat the food, yeah, yeah\u201d (<em>laughs<\/em>), I\u2019m making innuendo, I don\u2019t just talk about \u201cCr\u00eapes sirop d\u2019\u00e9rable\u201d. I\u2019ve noticed that \u201cS.P.A.L.A.\u201d, live, works almost too well, the crowd shouts \u201cspaghetti garlic bread!\u201d It made me think that food is a bit like music. You\u2019re going to think of a dish and it\u2019s going to take you back to your grandmother\u2019s when you were young. I wanted to exploit the perceptual side of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"S.P.A.L.A. (feat. Vendou)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pjd86X7Zx2s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PAN M 360:<\/strong> Concerning the track \u201cCr\u00eape sirop d\u2019\u00e9rable\u201d, it\u2019s also a way of talking about Quebec identity. On <em>Bijou<\/em> you approach it differently, you say \u201cI\u2019m a fucking wanderer in my country, Canada.\u201d Can you explain your feelings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FouKi:<\/strong> I\u2019m not a hater of Canada, I love Canada, it\u2019s just that you have to be aware of it, I\u2019ve been out West with my girlfriend and I met people who didn\u2019t think we could speak French in Quebec, they just don\u2019t know, some people think we speak English. It\u2019s a mixture of ignorance and thoughtlessness on the part of Canadians who are not Quebecers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FouKi - Bijou \/\/ Vid\u00e9oclip officiel\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/__cm0avX80g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PAN M 360:<\/strong> Is your rap music a platform for highlighting this culture?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FouKi:<\/strong> You know, when you\u2019re a young artist, you look for your identity, that was part of my questioning \u2013 \u201cI could rap in English, or more French style\u201d \u2013 at some point it\u2019s not just my personal identity, I want it to be Quebecois. My father comes from Baie-Comeau and my mother from Lac Saint Jean, I was born in Montreal, it\u2019s a nice mix. I grew up in a culturally diverse environment, I still have my Quebec roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/panm360.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Fouki_Grignotines_08_v01-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33453\"\/><figcaption><em>Photo: F\u00e9lix Renaud<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PAN M 360:<\/strong> Who did you mainly work with on this album?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FouKi:<\/strong> \u201cBeigne\u201d is a song by Richard Beynon who did \u201cCiel\u201d (with Alicia Moffet) too. That beat was supposed to be for Kanye West and he slept on it. After that, Marc Vinvent composed \u201cTable d\u2019h\u00f4te\u201d with me in mind. Except on \u201cGrignotines\u201d and \u201cPCU\u201d, where I made the basic beat, it\u2019s pretty much all Michel (Quiet Mike) and Cl\u00e9ment (the guitarist of Clay and Friends).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PAN M 360:<\/strong> You sampled the voice of Louis-Jos\u00e9 Houde, who did a very remarkable sketch about you at the Gala de l\u2019ADISQ 2019 \u2013 is that a tribute?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FouKi:<\/strong> It\u2019s all because of him. The 2019 Gala, for me, I won more than a Felix or two or three \u2013 Louis-Jos\u00e9 Houde\u2019s sketch was worth all the Felixes in the world! I thought it was funny that he said that a rapper who talks about snacks is out of this world, it doesn\u2019t make sense. It really inspired me, I wanted to follow the delirium. Apparently he likes my music, we sent him the whole thing to find out if he agreed and he was super down with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Louis-Jos\u00e9 Houde et les demandes de loges \u00e0 Fouki\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jzK8E9Jz_68?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PAN M 360:<\/strong> That\u2019s not the only vocal sample you used. On \u201cBeigne\u201d, you hear &#8220;As I get older I say the same shit as when I was 16 \/ But now in meetings I\u2019m taken seriously.\u201d Who\u2019s behind it, and is it an analogy for your evolution in the Quebec rap scene?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FouKi:<\/strong> There\u2019s a funny story behind it. I can\u2019t say who it is because I tried to send him the song but they didn\u2019t reply. It happened at the St-Jean show, the person was telling a story to \u00c9mile Bilodeau and I, and I asked to record it because it was too perfect, they said yes but didn\u2019t say, \u201cgo ahead and put it on your album\u201d (<em>laughs<\/em>). That\u2019s why I high-pitched their voice by +4, so that we don\u2019t know if it\u2019s a woman or a man. It spoke to me so much, it\u2019s so true! When you\u2019re young, you\u2019re not taken seriously, as you get older you gain recognition from your peers and you can fulfil childhood or teenage dreams.
