I would wake up in the morning with big black circles under my eyes, so my friends called me \u2018the raccoon\u2019.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The year 2020 was a banner year for Raccoon. After being named Radio-Canada&#8217;s Hip-Hop Revelation 2020-2021, and publishing a monograph on systemic racism, he unveiled his third album, <em>Le set up<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a very good year for me, I realized that I got more attention than I thought,\u201d says Shamyr Dal\u00e9us-Louis. \u201cHowever, the fact that it was a tough year for everyone was a bit detrimental to the branding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Raccoon - Univers Parall\u00e8le [vid\u00e9oclip officiel]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4VOdiXrICGE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quarantine caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is also at the source of the concept of <em>Le set up<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring the lockdown, there was a lot of negative energy in my head,\u201d he explains. \u201cI imagined it was like a big trap that we fell into. I remembered where I&#8217;d been and thought I&#8217;d seen worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rapper from Pointe-aux-Trembles wanted to push this trap concept as much on the substance as the form of the album. Working notably with French producer 94showtime, Raccoon has somewhat modified the mood of his music to make it more accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I felt I didn&#8217;t want to do anything too aggressive, too dark,&#8221; he says. The productions that 94showtime sent me were very upbeat, very soul, very pop. It allowed us to make an antithesis in the music, with heavy subjects and a light atmosphere. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early summer, as a major movement for racial equality was taking shape here and elsewhere, Raccoon released the song 19-2 &#8220;in support of the troops who were demonstrating&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Raccoon City - 19-2 [vid\u00e9oclip officiel]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xO8Rp9uXG6I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI come from a housing project in Pointe-aux-Trembles,\u201d he explains. \u201cGiven the large majority of black boys living there, we were often subject to profiling. I wanted to be a model, to say that we can also use rap to talk about that today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the rapper abandons the issues of systemic racism and police brutality on <em>Le set up<\/em>, which is intended to be more introspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s really a project that concerns me personally,\u201d he says. \u201c<em>Gentil pour un noir<\/em> was an album to introduce myself. <em>Le set up<\/em> is more for those who already know me: here are eight tracks while waiting for the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/panm360.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Entrevue-Raccoon-2-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28937\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although he considers that he may eventually have to leave la Belle Province to make a living from his trade, Raccoon proudly defends the Quebec hip-hop scene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we have the most complete rap scene. It&#8217;s wonderful, what&#8217;s happening with keb rap. The disadvantage we have is that we lack structure, and people who talk about us. We&#8217;re brand new and fresh, it&#8217;s normal that it takes a little time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Raccoon City - Cachets [Vid\u00e9oclip Officiel]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9y9XTSzH50M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a personal point of view, Raccoon feels that he still has a lot to do in his career to move to the next level \u2013 and with that, the pressure that comes with his growing notoriety.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can&#8217;t stay an emerging artist all my life,\u201d he jokes. \u201cMy career is evolving and I&#8217;m under a bit of pressure to fill rooms and really make it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While waiting to make like Loud, his favourite local rapper \u2013 Raccoon is \u201cfascinated by winners\u201d \u2013 who boasts of only playing to full houses, Raccoon reminds us of his desire to remain authentic in his quest for success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy goal is to be the best, the one who sells the most,\u201d he says. \u201cI want to go as far as possible while remaining myself, with as little compromise as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/panm360.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Entrevue-Raccoon-3-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28935\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhen I was younger, in high school, I often spent my nights writing.
