The small but vitally located island country is also incredibly complex in terms of its political status \u2013 and sacred beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A visit to the famous Longshan Temple, in the capital city Taipei, reveals something like a shopping-mall food court for divine blessings, to be sought from an assortment of Buddhist, Taoist, and folk deities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not surprising then that Taiwan has such rich folklore \u2013 especially the vengeful ghosts! \u2013 and so much room for outr\u00e9 perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s plenty of all that to be savoured on Mong Tong\u2019s <em>Mystery<\/em>, released on Guruguru Brain, the label for Asian underground music run by Japan\u2019s Kikagaku Moyo. Mong Tong is, more precisely, the brothers Hom Yu and Jiun Chi (who answer here mostly as a pair, due to linguistic challenges, or maybe some frightful fraternal psychic link\u2026 who knows?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe voice in \u2018Chakra\u2019 was sampled from a famous reporter talking about aliens and chakras in Hinduism,\u201d Mong Tong say of the album\u2019s first single. \u201cSo basically, this is a song for those who love alien TV shows and conspiracy theories!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mong Tong - Chakra\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xe7G1OrO284?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are further dusty, uncanny wonders lurking in the grooves of Mystery, such as the elements that make up the second single, \u201cJou-tau\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the beginning, we sampled the voiceover from the Monkey King movie,\u201d Mong Tong explain, referring to the 1999 Taiwanese production <em>Heavenly Legend<\/em>, one of countless film, TV, and comic-book tales of the superstar simian demigod Sun Wukong. \u201cThe song is basically Chi\u2019s organ riffs, plus guitar improvisation, plus Yu\u2019s funky bassline, all put together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there\u2019s \u201cA Nambra\u201d, which suggests that\u2019s somewhere on one of the many levels of Diyu, or Chinese hell, there\u2019s a decent dancefloor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2018A Nambra\u2019 is our disco-funk hit! Funky \u201970s basslines are our favourite, so we were making our version of disco-funk. We brought the synth leads into the funky song, to see what would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the K. Court\u201d, meanwhile, subtly suggests a certain \u201970s prog-rock reference, the mention of which delights Mong Tong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGlad someone finally found the King Crimson reference! In our live shows, we always combine this song with \u201821st Century Schizoid Man\u2019, and surprise the audience \u2013 totally worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/panm360.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/MongTong-livres-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22078\"\/><figcaption><em><em>A selection of book covers from Hom Yu\u2019s Instagram page<\/em><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back to the crazy conspiracy-culture stuff, and Mong Tong\u2019s celebration of it specifically as they existed before the Internet, when lurid paperbacks, dubious magazines, and printed propaganda by mail were the primary platform. With all that, it has to be said, came an incredible visual aesthetic, entirely unmatched by the graphic mediocrity of today\u2019s dabblers in the delusional. Taiwan, for its part, had no shortage of such fringe beliefs in their heyday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn \u201980 and \u201990s Taiwan, there were magazines that talked about ghosts, Taoism, and UFOs, and had supernatural photos. After decades, these themes are no longer popular. Most of these books are lost, and can only be found at a few second-hand bookstores. We\u2019ve spent much time searching them out, and chose some of our favourite book covers, then put them on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/homyu_books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hom\u2019s Instagram<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cover of <em>Mystery<\/em> is a salute to that scene, and itself a sort of puzzle, a secret coded message to decipher. Pressed to provide any hint or clues, the brothers offer only this cryptic morsel. \u201cThere\u2019s a conspiracy theory called Q33 NY, that\u2019s all we can tell!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mong Tong - Taiwan Mystery I\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BQO5WzrMYCY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last fall, just a few months prior to the powerhouse <em>Mystery<\/em>, Mong Tong released an EP and book called <em>Music From Taiwan Mystery<\/em> \u2013 a sort of tourist\u2019s guidebook to Taiwan\u2019s rich reservoir of occult weirdness. There was even an amazing video for it (see above), bursting with black magic rituals and supernatural kung fu. Obviously, Mong Tong\u2019s music is more than well suited to visual interpretation (see below, now, for the video for \u201c717\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;d love to experiment on any kind of artform! Basically, we do everything by ourselves, so we\u2019re able to put Taiwanese elements we love into our music, videos, cover artwork, etc. Now we\u2019re planning to release a second <em>Taiwan Mystery<\/em>, an EP for plants, and maybe in the future, we\u2019ll make a video game \u2013 everything is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mong Tong - 717\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kByLb-Hxmkg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mong Tong is just one of several arcane activities the brothers are involved in. They\u2019re more than happy to talk about those, as well as the larger Taiwanese underground scene they\u2019re so involved in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDope Purple is a noise and psychedelic rock band,\u201d says Jiun of one of his other projects, \u201cmainly influenced by Acid Mothers Temple and Les Rallizes D\u00e9nud\u00e9s. We\u2019ve released <a href=\"https:\/\/senko-issha.bandcamp.com\/album\/live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a record on Senko Issha<\/a>, a label for noise music and free improvisation lovers in Taiwan. Mong Tong has collaborated with labels like <a href=\"https:\/\/futureproofsounds.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Future Proof<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/karmadetonationtapes.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Karma Detonation Tapes<\/a>. Both of them have great artists and release good-quality cassettes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI play guitar and synthesizer in Prairie WWWW, an amazing experimental psych-rock band,\u201d says Hom. \u201cYou should definitely check <a href=\"https:\/\/prairiewwww.bandcamp.com\/album\/pa-n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our latest album, <em>P\u00e1n<\/em><\/a> (yes, the same name as PAN M 360!).
