Like most pop, rock, or other experiments, this one began in a basement, at the home of Charles-Antoine Olivier, aka CAO, drummer of Zen Bamboo.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simon\nLarose, singer, guitarist and lyricist of the group, sums it up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn\nthe beginning, it was really nothing more than spending the weekend\njamming in the drummer\u2019s basement. It was our main hobby as\nteenagers, which gradually became professional. Today, [bassist]\nXavier Touikan and I are 24 years old, CAO and [guitarist] L\u00e9o are\neach 22. None of us studied music after high school; we all took\nprograms in visual arts, literature, film and communications at CEGEP\nand university. CAO completed an undergraduate degree in film at\nUQAM, L\u00e9o was enrolled in visual arts, Xavier in digital arts, and I\nin comparative literature. We all took a break from university to do\nmusic full time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zen Bamboo \/\/ Glu (coule sur moi)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jKO87LGaxyE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The music of Zen Bamboo is hard not notice, it is rich, shaggy, voluminous and ear-catching. Larose takes a new look at the stylistic side of the story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe\nindie rock and the emo of the 2000s are very important in the matter.\nHip hop and R&amp;B also permeate our musical culture, they are major\ninfluences even if they aren\u2019t apparent. When we were working on\nthis album, we were thinking about Frank Ocean, or even less tasteful\nrappers, like Lil Peep. We were also thinking about Grimes\u2019 pop. As\nfor the most crucial influences, I\u2019m thinking of Nirvana, The\nPixies, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Built to Spill, Elliott Smith, Frank\nZappa, Jacques Brel, George Brassens, Jacques Dutronc, Richard\nDesjardins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although\nthey are of rock allegiance, the young guys from Zen Bamboo are this\napparently now classic genre to the digital age. Larose explains how\nthey do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\noffer rock songs based on simple structures. The arrangements are\nless simple, and it\u2019s in the way we work that it happens. For\nexample, you can take a drum pattern and adapt it in different ways;\nyou can remove or inject elements from the original recording to\ngenerate new effects. Our songs were composed with guitars, bass,\ndrums, and then we spent a lot of time on the computer. We tried a\nthousand things, transformed the sound recordings, imagined several\ncollages. To this day, the strength\nof the group is at its greatest in front of an audience. Larose says\nit loud and clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s\nwhat we like to do the most, and that\u2019s how we made our name. To\nthis day, I find us even better on stage than on record. You know, we\nplay together regularly for the simple pleasure of playing, it\u2019s\nstill our favourite hobby even after six years of existence. For the\nnext show, by the way, we plan to adapt the songs by playing them\nwithout machines, which allows us to change the interpretation in\nreal time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Julien\nMineau, leader of the group Malajube (2006-2011) and the Fontarabie\nproject (2014), produced <em>GLU<\/em>. Larose describes the connection\nthey established: \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur\nformer manager frequented a bar in the Quartier Latin where\nMalajube\u2019s bassist, Mathieu Cournoyer, was, and he put us in touch\nwith Mineau. Of course, Malajube is a mythical band for all young\nQuebecers of my generation who play rock. In our specific case, the\ninfluence of Malajube and Julien Mineau is mainly felt in the\nlayering of sounds. Also in the way their songs culminate. Having\nsaid that, we really didn\u2019t want to sound like Malajube, while\nevoking their influence with care. What we did with him, in fact,\ndoesn\u2019t fit in with the Quebec rock thread. And if there\u2019s anyone\nwho wants to do something other than Malajube, it\u2019s Julien Mineau!\nNevertheless, I admit that musically, it\u2019s in the same creative\nspirit. When it comes to writing lyrics, however, we\u2019re not really\nin the same place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed,\nLarose&#8217;s lyrics have little in common with those of his musical\nmentor. He attempts an explanation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen\nit\u2019s confusing and sketchy in the writing, when I try to create an\nimbalance, a diagonal effect, it brings me immense aesthetic and\nsymbolic satisfaction. To confuse, to say one thing to mean another,\nor to say pointless things, or exaggerate other things, it\u2019s a big\ngame for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And\nthe tone? Simon says he feels \u201cenraged\u201d when he writes and\nexpresses his song lyrics. Why is this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\ntry to make sense of what I see all around me and&#8230; it\u2019s all so\nstrange, violent, chaotic, absurd. My references range from 9\/11 to\nthe prospect of making children in this world in disarray. So I see\nsongwriting like a bull seeing red.
