Here are two of my favourite shows from the final evening of 2023\u2019s M for Montreal festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alix Fernz <\/strong>\u2013 <strong>Brazen Bravado<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1106\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/panm360.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/AlixFernz-MfM-StephanB-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111042\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panm360.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/AlixFernz-MfM-StephanB-5.jpg 1106w, https:\/\/panm360.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/AlixFernz-MfM-StephanB-5-768x556.jpg 768w, https:\/\/panm360.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/AlixFernz-MfM-StephanB-5-1536x1111.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1106px) 100vw, 1106px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Oozing sex and a distinctly devil-may-care, diva persona, Alix Fernz was a pleasure to watch Saturday night at Ausgang Plaza. Gritty, angular punk rock married beautifully with Fernz\u2019s irreverent, borderline bratty vocals, which feel almost otherworldly once they\u2019ve been filtered through his eclectic circuit board of synths and effects laid out on the table in front of them. Despite Fernz\u2019s intense, post-punk-driven direction, there was a groove and even a sweetness that was so apparent from the outset. He obviously doesn\u2019t take himself too seriously, which is a good thing when it comes to his atypical brand of brazen bravado. Fernz\u2019s band was also excellent, featuring powerful, driving drums, rock-steady bass, and a fantastic blend of synth and guitar to keep us guessing. Fernz\u2019s set was all meat, no filler, and an absolute blast to watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pelada \u2013 D&amp;B From the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Montreal duo Pelada has become known for a number of things over the years, including their live performances. While I was initially disappointed to hear that the pair wouldn\u2019t be busting out any live vocals for their Saturday night set at Fairmount Theatre, this feeling didn\u2019t last long. Delivering a crunchy, gravelly, futuristic set of D&amp;B, house, and strange, post-techno, Pelada invigorated. Thumping bass. Screeching synths. Dirty vocal samples. It\u2019s the kind of music that makes you want to do something mildly illegal in a dirty club bathroom, or perhaps do triple the limit on a nighttime city street.
