He had been in and out of hospital since having a stroke in July 2020. Born Neville O&#8217;Riley Livingston, Bunny was the last surviving founding member of The Wailers. The trio would disintegrate in 1973 as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BobMarley\/?__cft__[0]=AZXPcCOhHUxCrr9YeZElsJX5G7kZ-9_zlCtkanbMY8W4YzfP6sIVGAH1kapef7YbT1bJAI3JQ1OXar6ZVIbyhVyANVcjrInLkyRlRNrH3zvUGH_9BriD02yLbhWbMYoA08SRz6ht0auJhSJawQHZ_YWq&amp;__tn__=kK-R\">Bob Marley<\/a> became a global icon before his death from cancer in 1981, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PeterTosh\/?__cft__[0]=AZXPcCOhHUxCrr9YeZElsJX5G7kZ-9_zlCtkanbMY8W4YzfP6sIVGAH1kapef7YbT1bJAI3JQ1OXar6ZVIbyhVyANVcjrInLkyRlRNrH3zvUGH_9BriD02yLbhWbMYoA08SRz6ht0auJhSJawQHZ_YWq&amp;__tn__=kK-R\">Peter Tosh<\/a> would become a martyr after he was murdered in his home during a robbery in 1987. When I interviewed Bunny at length in 2010, HOUR mag slugged the cover story \u201cThe Forgotten Wailer\u201d (to preview Bunny\u2019s show at the Montreal International Reggae Festival).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bob Marley &amp; The Wailers - Stir It Up (Live at The Old Grey Whistle, 1973)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rf8GjhXvOjU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But sometimes Bunny could be his own worst enemy&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For that cover story, the world\u2019s foremost Marley and Wailers historian, my friend Roger Steffens, told me, \u201cLeroy Jodie Pierson and I spent the decade of the 90s working tirelessly on Bunny Wailer\u2019s autobiography, <em>Old Fire Sticks<\/em>. We began with 64 hours of interviews over a three-week period, locked in a Kingston hotel room with him and various colleagues from different periods of the Wailers\u2019 history. There are more than 1,800 pages of transcripts, detailing almost day-by-day Bunny\u2019s life, from the time he was 8, with Bob Marley. Virtually all the questions fans have about the Wailers\u2019 history are answered in Bunny\u2019s often bitter memoir. He never formally told Leroy and me that he had abandoned the project, reportedly under pressure from the Marley clan, and we had to learn this sad news from his bandleader back in 2001. I consider his failure to share his side of the story a crime against history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bunny Wailer ~ Ram Dance Hall, Jolly Session &amp; Sabotage ~ Live 1987\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dMhxR98AmdE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Festival International de Jazz de Montr\u00e9al co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=571705487&amp;__cft__[0]=AZXPcCOhHUxCrr9YeZElsJX5G7kZ-9_zlCtkanbMY8W4YzfP6sIVGAH1kapef7YbT1bJAI3JQ1OXar6ZVIbyhVyANVcjrInLkyRlRNrH3zvUGH_9BriD02yLbhWbMYoA08SRz6ht0auJhSJawQHZ_YWq&amp;__tn__=-]K-R\">Andr\u00e9 M\u00e9nard<\/a> was also burnt by Bunny who got a $10K advance for a 1998 festival concert no-show. So when the Montreal Reggae Festival booked Bunny in 2010, Andr\u00e9 told me, \u201cWe\u2019re not taking any action against Wailer because we don\u2019t want to give him an excuse not to come a second time. Bunny Wailer posed to me as a man of integrity and principle. I still think he is a great artist. But a man of integrity? Fuck it! I\u2019m still waiting for his personal invitation to see him at the Reggae Festival. That will be the most expensive concert ticket I\u2019ve ever paid for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, Wailer was a no-show for that concert too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of his legendary yet tumultuous career, Wailer won three Grammys and received Jamaica&#8217;s Order Of Merit in 2017. He is forever a reggae icon.
