Maria Chavez, pioneer of abstract turntablism, will present her practice of improvisation with a single turntable, incorporating broken hands and non-musical sounds. Chavez doesn’t just play; she breaks and scratches records and indulges in all manner of antics, making the performance a presence equal to that of the music. Toronto-based composer SlowPitchSound will present his signature style of music production, blending turntablism, sample manipulation and field recordings to create sci-fi inspired soundscapes. SlowPitchSound creates in the spirit of Afrofuturism, and its sounds will soothe and unsettle all at once. Montreal guitarist Mat Ball will contribute to the cause of sonic experimentation with his solo performance, showcasing his refined balance of massive and fragile sounds. Mat Ball takes a conceptual approach to his performances in which he “plays the part”, constantly seeking to make the environments in which he performs as resonant as a possible instrument.
