\u00c0 23 ans, la saxophoniste t\u00e9nor ZOH AMBA n\u2019est rien de moins qu\u2019un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne. Sortie de son Tennessee natal pour s\u2019installer \u00e0 New York et mue par une \u00e9nergie hors du commun, elle fait tourner beaucoup de t\u00eates, \u00e0 commencer par celles d\u2019improvisateurs qui ont deux, trois, voire quatre fois son \u00e2ge. L\u2019an dernier, elle a publi\u00e9 trois albums encens\u00e9s par la critique. Son tout premier comme leader<\/em>, O, Sun<\/em>, a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par JOHN ZORN pour l\u2019\u00e9tiquette Tzadik, ce qui est d\u00e9j\u00e0 un gage de talent. Elle y est accompagn\u00e9e par le jeune pianiste MICAH THOMAS (Billy Drummond, Immanuel Wilkins), le bassiste THOMAS MORGAN (Bill Frisell, Jim Black) et le batteur Joey Baron. Elle a aussi endisqu\u00e9 et jou\u00e9 avec MATT HOLLENBERG, Tyshawn Sorey et William Parker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a rarement vu une musicienne (ou un musicien, d\u2019ailleurs) int\u00e9grer si profond\u00e9ment l\u2019histoire du free jazz et trouver sa propre voix \u00e0 un si jeune \u00e2ge. Sa musique est anim\u00e9e du sentiment d\u2019urgence d\u2019un Albert Ayler, mais aussi du genre d\u2019appel d\u00e9votionnel qu\u2019on peut entendre chez Alice Coltrane ou Matana Roberts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tenor sax player ZOH AMBA, age 23, is nothing less than a phenomenon. Born in Tennessee, she moved to New York pushed by an unmatched drive, and she has been drawing a lot of attention since, notably from improvisers who have twice, three times, and even four times her age. Last year, she released three critically acclaimed albums. Her debut as a leader, O, Sun<\/em>, was produced by JOHN ZORN for the Tzadik label\u2014quite a seal of approval! On that record, she is backed by young pianist MICAH THOMAS (Billy Drummond, Immanuel Wilkins), bassist THOMAS MORGAN (Bill Frisell, Jim Black), and drummer Joey Baron. AMBA has also performed and recorded with MATT HOLLENBERG, Tyshawn Sorey, and William Parker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seldom have we seen a musician (man or woman) digest so deeply the history of free jazz and find their own voice at such a young age. AMBA\u2019s music is driven by an Albert Ayler-like sense of urgency, but also features the kind of devotional call one can find in Alice Coltrane or Matana Roberts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
