It brings together the Afro-American tradition (blues, gospel), the colorful swing of Duke Ellington and the achievements of bebop. He flirts with Western classical writing and anticipates the revolution of free jazz. Charles Mingus remains the one whose emotion, even violent and disturbing, is certainly the most honest. His eclectic style, open and free, crosses all the great currents of jazz. Normand Guilbeault could well be the first Canadian musician to have demonstrated a deep recognition of the influence of Charles Mingus.
