Joe Sullivan est originaire de la ville de Timmins, dans le nord de l\u2019Ontario. Il grandit dans une grande famille franco-ontarienne, o\u00fb la musique faisait parti des activit\u00e9s quotidiennes. Sa formation musicale d\u00e9buta au piano durant son enfance et, plus tard, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de quinze ans, il d\u00e9couvrit la trompette. Sa passion pour la musique lui mena a entreprendre divers activit\u00e9s musicales durant sa jeunesse: il participa \u00e0 divers concours r\u00e9gionales de musique classique, fut membre de divers groupes de musique populaire et composa de la musique pour des pi\u00e9ces de th\u00e9\u00e2tre. Il re\u00e7ut son Baccalaur\u00e9at en trompette classique \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Ottawa en 1981. Son d\u00e9sire d\u2019explorer le monde du jazz lui mena ensuite \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole de musique Berklee, puis au New England Conservatory of Music \u00e0 Boston, o\u00f9 il obtint une Ma\u00eetrise en Interpr\u00e9tation Jazz en 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
La m\u00eame ann\u00e9e il s\u2019installe \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. Depuis, il est actif en tant que trompettiste, compositeur, arrangeur, et chef d\u2019orchestre. Compositeur prolifique, il dirige son sextuor, son grand ensemble et participe a divers projets en petites formations. Il compte huit disques compactes \u00e0 son nom, le plus r\u00e9cent \u00e9tant \u201cUnfamiliar Surroundings<\/strong>\u201d (Perry Lake Records 2017) en grand ensemble. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 membre du Vic Vogel Big Band pendant une trentaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es; il a \u00e9t\u00e9 soliste avec l\u2019Orchestre Symphonique de Montr\u00e9al et le Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; il a jou\u00e9 avec de nombreux artistes renomm\u00e9s y compris Slide Hampton, <\/strong>Don Thompson, Lorne Lofsky, Pat Labarbera, Kirk Macdonald, R\u00e9mi Bolduc, John Medeski, John McNeil, Alain Caron, George Garzone<\/strong>, and Ranee Lee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9cipient du Prix Socan (1991) et du Prix DuMaurier (Joel Miller Group, 1997) au Festival de Jazz de Montr\u00e9al, ainsi que de plusieurs subventions du Conseil des Arts du Canada et du Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Qu\u00e9bec. Il enseigne pr\u00e9sentement l\u2019arrangement et la composition jazz, et dirige le l\u2019Orchestre de Jazz 1 \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McGill, o\u00fb il est un professeur agr\u00e9g\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Joe Sullivan comes from the Northern Ontario town of Timmins. He grew up in a large franco-ontarian family, where music was a part of daily life. He began his formal training on piano and later, at the age of fifteen, started playing the trumpet. During his youth, he led an active musical life that included classical piano competitions, rock bands and high school concert and stage bands. He also composed music for several theater productions. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical trumpet at the University of Ottawa in 1981. His interest in jazz led him to the Berklee School of Music, then to the New England Conservatory of Music, where he received a Master\u2019s degree in Jazz Studies in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since then he has lived in Montreal and has been active as a performer, composer, arranger and bandleader. A prolific composer, Sullivan leads and has written extensively for both his jazz sextet and his jazz Big Band and is active with a variety of small groups. He has eight compact discs to his name, the most recent being \u201cUnfamiliar Surroundings<\/strong>\u201d (Perry Lake Records 2017) with the Joe Sullivan Big Band. He has served as conductor and arranger with the Kirk MacDonald Jazz Orchestra; was been a member of the Vic Vogel Big Band for some thirty years; has appeared as a trumpet soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montr\u00e9al; and has performed with numerous jazz artists of international repute, including Slide Hampton, <\/strong>Don Thompson, Lorne Lofsky, Pat Labarbera, Kirk Macdonald, R\u00e9mi Bolduc, John Medeski, Alain Caron, George Garzone<\/strong>, and Ranee Lee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has received both the Prix Socan (1991) and the Prix DuMaurier (Joel Miller Group, 1997) at the Montreal International Jazz Festival as well as several awards from the Canadian and Qu\u00e9bec arts councils.
