Unessential Oils<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unessential Oils est le nouveau projet de Warren Spicer, chanteur du groupe montr\u00e9alais Plants and Animals. Le projet est inspir\u00e9 par le jazz, le folk, le Tropic\u00e1lia, Jorge Ben, Daniel Lanois, Miles Davis et plus encore. La musique a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ue dans un bain. Tr\u00e8s ouverte et mall\u00e9able, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 compar\u00e9e \u00e0 Alabaster DePlume, Connan Mockasin, Hermanos Guti\u00e9rrez et Devendra Banhart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unessential Oils is a search for something authentic. Bits and pieces of Warren Spicer\u2019s life\u2019s traumas and weaknesses, successes and breakthroughs, moments of clarity and enlightenment mixed with the mundane and menial. The weight of grief and anger imposed on the joy and ecstatic freedom of new life. \u201cThe process was the therapy of working through, the result is more a document than construction, it\u2019s what happened, not what I made happen,\u201d he says.
Warren is widely known as the front-person for Montreal band Plants and Animals and as a producer, engineer and mixer (La Force, Comment Debord, Ludovic Alarie). This is his first solo record, an opportunity to take his collective experience and focus on a singular vision.
The result is an album that\u2019s somewhat like a jazz record in that it\u2019s about the musicians\u2019 performances. Many of the songs are quite minimal in terms of songwriting, but the execution and the playing are very adventurous with room for embellishment and playing around. The songs are filled with small patterns that loop again and again, and the musicians were encouraged to play whatever they want, to react to the music and to each other. The mics were turned up loud and everyone played quietly, complementing Warren\u2019s vocals, which are more conversational in terms of range and volume, almost under-sung. The four backup singers are singing in unison \u2013 a hat tip to the backing-vocal style in Brazilian Tropical\u00eda records \u2013 gently enveloping the lead vocals.
This isn\u2019t a cerebral record, it\u2019s an emotional one.
Unessential Oils was created with co-producer and keyboardist Christophe Lamarche-Ledoux (Chocolat, Organ Mood, Lesser Evil), bassist Miska Stein (Patrick Watson, Teke Teke, Fhang) and drummer Tommy Crane (Aaron Parks, Martha Wainwright). Tommy\u2019s drumming was crucial to realizing a lot of jazz possibilities on the album. When percussionist Martin Dicham (Sade, Talk Talk, Mark Hollis, Tina Turner) joined the project it was the final piece in the puzzle that let the songs take their full shape. His percussion arrangements and his distinctive Martin Dicham sound helped define the songs in this strongly percussive album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parolier et chanteur montr\u00e9alais reconnu pour son r\u00f4le au sein du groupe comment debord, R\u00e9mi Gauvin nous revient cette fois seul sur sc\u00e8ne pour d\u00e9voiler quelques pi\u00e8ces d\u2019un nouveau projet solo \u00e0 para\u00eetre. Soulign\u00e9s par la critique, ce sont ici v\u00e9ritablement les textes sensibles et originaux de l\u2019auteur-compositeur-interpr\u00e8te qui sont mis de l\u2019avant. \u00c0 travers des compositions in\u00e9dites, il d\u00e9voile une \u0153uvre plus intime, nourrie par ses relations et exp\u00e9riences personnelles.

Montreal-based songwriter and singer R\u00e9mi Gauvin, known for his role in the band Comment Debord, returns to the stage this time alone to unveil a few tracks from a new solo project to be released soon. Critically acclaimed, it is truly the sensitive and original lyrics of the singer-songwriter that are highlighted here. Through new compositions, he unveils a more intimate work, nourished by his personal relationships and experiences.
