Myriam Gendron<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayday est le troisi\u00e8me LP de l\u2019artiste montr\u00e9alaise Myriam Gendron. Il fait suite \u00e0 ses albums pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents, acclam\u00e9s par la critique, Not So Deep As A Well (2014) et Ma d\u00e9lire \u2013 Chansons d\u2019amour, perdues et trouv\u00e9es (2021). Avant son premier album, la principale activit\u00e9 musicale de Myriam \u00e9tait de jouer dans la rue dans les stations du m\u00e9tro parisien, interpr\u00e9tant les chansons de Leonard Cohen et d\u2019autres, en s\u2019accompagnant \u00e0 la guitare. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son travail quotidien, dans une librairie de Montr\u00e9al, Myriam a d\u00e9couvert les po\u00e8mes de l\u2019\u00e9crivaine am\u00e9ricaine Dorothy Parker, mieux connue pour son esprit tranchant que pour ses vers. Inspir\u00e9e par les paroles de Parker, Myriam a \u00e9crit de la musique pour accompagner une suite d\u2019entre elles, puis a enregistr\u00e9 le r\u00e9sultat dans sa chambre. Ces enregistrements constituent son premier LP et continuent de ravir les auditeurs qui les d\u00e9couvrent, par leur fra\u00eecheur, leur clart\u00e9 et leur humour. Apr\u00e8s une br\u00e8ve pause, Myriam a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 explorer les traditions folkloriques complexes du Qu\u00e9bec (et d\u2019ailleurs) en enregistrant le 2LP, Ma d\u00e9lire, qui combine des chansons traditionnelles et originales (en grande partie en fran\u00e7ais) avec des arrangements qui laissent place \u00e0 des interm\u00e8des musicaux avant-gardistes de tels artistes. des gens comme le guitariste Bill Nace (Body\/Head) et le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre percussionniste de jazz Chris Corsano. Mayday est une fusion encore plus syncr\u00e9tique de ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments. La plupart des chansons sont originales, en anglais et en fran\u00e7ais, et m\u00e9langent avec abandon des \u00e9l\u00e9ments traditionnels et avant-gardistes. Mayday is the third LP by Montreal-based artist, Myriam Gendron. It follows her earlier, critically acclaimed albums, Not So Deep As A Well (2014) and Ma d\u00e9lire \u2013 Songs of love, lost & found (2021). Prior to her debut album, Myriam\u2019s primary musical focus was busking in Paris Metro stations, performing the songs of Leonard Cohen and others, accompanying herself on guitar. Through her day job, working at a Montreal bookstore, Myriam discovered the poems of American writer, Dorothy Parker, who was better known for her cutting wit than her verse. Inspired by Parker\u2019s words, Myriam wrote music to accompany a suite of them, then recorded the results in her bedroom. These recordings were issued as her debut LP, and continue to delight listeners who discover them, with their freshness, clarity and humor. After a brief hiatus, Myriam began exploring the complex folk traditions of Quebec (and beyond), recording the 2LP, Ma d\u00e9lire, which combines traditional and original songs (largely in French) with arrangements that make space for avant-garde musical interludes by such folks as guitarist Bill Nace (Body\/Head) and renowned jazz percussionist Chris Corsano. Mayday is an even more syncretic fusion of these elements. Most of the songs are original, in both English and French, and blend traditional and avant elements with abandon. Additional players this time include drummer Jim White (Dirty Three), guitarist Marisa Anderson, Montreal bassist C\u00e9dric Dind-Lavoie (a fellow fan of trad\/avant dynamism), Bill Nace and saxophonist Zoh Amba (whose horn actually gets the final \u201cword\u201d). Mayday is a thoroughly thrilling effort that manages to create new vistas of sound while maintaining a feel that is both intimate and familiar. Beautiful work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u00e9dric Dind-Lavoie<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Archives est le dernier projet du multi-instrumentiste et compositeur C\u00e9dric Dind-Lavoie, un spectacle qui marie les archives de folklore aux musiques ambiantes et introspectives.
Le musicien se r\u00e9approprie pour l\u2019occasion de vieux tr\u00e9sors retrouv\u00e9s au fil de recherches passionn\u00e9es, une s\u00e9lection de chansons et d\u2019airs instrumentaux des ann\u00e9es 40 et 50 tir\u00e9s notamment des collections des folkloristes Simonne Voyer, Roger Matton et Luc Lacourci\u00e8re. Il les accompagne ensuite, principalement au piano, les enrichissant d\u2019un habillage musical moderne et intimiste.
Il est aussi appuy\u00e9 sur sc\u00e8ne par le violoneux et multi-instrumentiste D\u00e2vi Simard qui, tout en \u00e9tant ouvertement tourn\u00e9 vers l\u2019exploration sonore en tout genre, am\u00e8ne un ancrage fort dans les codes traditionnels.
\u00c0 deux, ils forment finalement un trio avec la station d\u2019archives qui joue en temps r\u00e9el ces reliques du pass\u00e9, celles-ci \u00e9tant parfois actionn\u00e9es directement sur bobine ou sur vinyle, faisant ainsi \u00e9cho aux m\u00e9thodes d\u2019enregistrement originales.
En r\u00e9sulte un spectacle hautement po\u00e9tique qui, plut\u00f4t que de tomber dans un simple exercice nostalgique, permet de r\u00e9v\u00e9ler sous un nouveau jour ces archives, comme si les deux musiciens avaient pu se glisser entre les mailles du temps pour aller \u00e0 la rencontre de ces voix et de leurs histoires pour les accompagner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Archives is the last project of multi-instrumentalist and composer C\u00e9dric Dind-Lavoie, a show that blends old folklore recordings with ambient and introspective music.
For the occasion, the musician reappropriates old treasures found through passionate research, a selection of songs and instrumental tunes from the 40\u2019s and 50\u2019s drawn from the collections of folklorists Simonne Voyer, Roger Matton and Luc Lacourci\u00e8re. He then accompanies them, mainly on the piano, enriching them with a modern and intimate musical setting.
He is also supported on stage by the fiddler and multi-instrumentalist D\u00e2vi Simard who, while openly turned towards sound exploration of all kinds, brings a strong anchoring in the traditional codes. The two of them finally form a trio with the archive station that plays these relics of the past in real time, sometimes directly on reel-to-reel or vinyl, thus echoing the original recording methods.
The result is a highly poetic show that, rather than falling into a simple nostalgic exercise, reveals these archives in a new light, as if the two musicians had been able to slip through the cracks of time to meet these voices and their stories to accompany them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
