The Budos Band<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Budos Band est un big band am\u00e9ricain qui d\u00e9crit son style comme un m\u00e9lange de doom rock, d\u2019Afro-soul et de big band avec une touche des ann\u00e9es 1970. Leur approche plurielle tisse des ponts entre des univers musicaux aussi vari\u00e9s que la psych\u00e9d\u00e9lie planante, l\u2019Afro-funk, le hard rock des ann\u00e9es 1970 et la soul des ann\u00e9es 1960. Sur sc\u00e8ne, leur prestation est chor\u00e9graphi\u00e9e tout en restant intense, spontan\u00e9e, humoristique et centr\u00e9e sur l\u2019interaction avec le public. Les Budos sont un jam band du 21e si\u00e8cle : bien que leurs morceaux labyrinthiques et hypnotiques laissent place \u00e0 l\u2019improvisation, leurs arrangements sont toujours sophistiqu\u00e9s, pr\u00e9cis, et fond\u00e9s sur des grooves irr\u00e9sistibles.
\u00c0 leurs d\u00e9buts, le groupe cherchait \u00e0 fusionner les influences musicales de chacun de ses membres : l\u2019\u00e9thio-jazz de Mulatu Astatke, l\u2019afrobeat de Fela Kuti, la soul instrumentale des Bar-Kays, de Muscle Shoals, des Tower of Power Horns ou encore des J.B.’s. Entre 2005 et 2010, leurs trois premiers albums \u2014 Budos Band I, II et III \u2014 refl\u00e8tent bien cet h\u00e9ritage. Avec Burnt Offering en 2014, le groupe op\u00e8re un virage en incorporant des \u00e9l\u00e9ments de psych\u00e9d\u00e9lie des ann\u00e9es 1970 et de Krautrock, ajoutant des textures plus sombres et hallucinatoires \u00e0 leur palette sonore. Ils testeront ce nouveau son lors de tourn\u00e9es \u00e0 travers les \u00c9tats-Unis, l\u2019Europe et l\u2019Asie.
En 2019, V m\u00eale leur funk dansant habituel \u00e0 des influences rock psych\u00e9d\u00e9lique teint\u00e9es de m\u00e9tal. En 2020, ils c\u00e9l\u00e8brent leurs 15 ans d\u2019existence avec Long in the Tooth. L\u2019EP Frontier\u2019s Edge, compos\u00e9 de six titres, para\u00eet en 2023 sur Diamond West Records. The Budos Band are an American big band who describe their sound as “doom rock Afro-soul big band with a ’70s touch.” Their multivalent approach bridges musical universes from trippy psychedelia and Afro-funk to ’70s hard rock and late-’60s soul. Their choreographed stage show is at once intense, spontaneous, humorous, and geared toward audience participation. Budos are a 21st century jam band. While there is room for improvisation inside their often-hypnotic, labyrinthine compositions, their arrangements are sophisticated, tight, and centered on infectious grooves.
The group’s early years focused on integrating the music they loved as individuals — from Mulatu Astatke’s Ethio-jazz and Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat to funky instrumental soul of the Bar-Kays, Muscle Shoals, Tower of Power Horns, and J.B.’s. Their recorded catalog, between 2005 and 2010 — Budos Band I, II, and III — appropriately reflected those influences. With 2014’s Burnt Offering, Budos shifted gears, blending elements of early-’70s psychedelia and Krautrock, adding darker, more hallucinatory textural elements to thier sound. They toured and road-tested their material across the U.S., Europe and Asia.
Budos Band integrated their tried-and-true, danceable funkiness with metal-tinged, psych rock on 2019’s V. They celebrated 15 years together woth 2020’s Long in the Tooth. Frontier’s Edge, a six track EP appeared on Diamond West Records in 2023. Budos returned in 2025 with VII, an album directly decended from Burnt Offering a decade earlier but much further up the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secret Chiefs 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comme Mr. Bungle est bien connu pour prendre de longues pauses entre ses albums (il leur a fallu quatre ans pour faire suite \u00e0 leur premier disque en 1991), ses membres se retrouvent souvent avec beaucoup de temps libre. Plut\u00f4t que de rester inactifs, les membres du groupe mettent ce temps \u00e0 profit en \u00e9crivant, enregistrant et tournant avec d\u2019autres groupes ou via divers projets parall\u00e8les.
Parmi ceux-ci, le plus notable est sans doute Secret Chiefs 3, un projet men\u00e9 par trois membres de Mr. Bungle : Trey Spruance (guitare\/voix), Trevor Dunn (basse\/voix) et Danny Heifetz (batterie). Si quelqu\u2019un doute encore que Mr. Bungle ne soit qu\u2019un tremplin pour les prouesses vocales de Mike Patton, Secret Chiefs 3 est la preuve irr\u00e9futable du contraire. Trey Spruance y prend les commandes en tant que leader : il a \u00e9crit tous les morceaux du premier album First Grand Constitution and Bylaws (1996) et en a \u00e9galement assur\u00e9 la production.
Avant la sortie de ce premier long format, le groupe avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9veill\u00e9 la curiosit\u00e9 des fans en glissant un single de Secret Chiefs 3 avec les copies vinyles du chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre Disco Volante de Mr. Bungle (1995). Ils avaient aussi enregistr\u00e9 une version d\u00e9cal\u00e9e de \u00ab I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus \u00bb pour une compilation de No\u00ebl japonaise. Leur participation \u00e0 un album hommage japonais aux Beach Boys d\u00e9montre aussi leur capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 s\u2019attaquer \u00e0 pratiquement tous les styles musicaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since Mr. Bungle is notorious for taking substantial amounts of time between albums (it took them four years to follow up their 1991 debut), its bandmembers are left with a lot of time on their hands. Hence the members of Mr. Bungle use their off time wisely, by writing, recording, and touring with other bands or, often, side projects.
The best side project of the bunch, Secret Chiefs 3, features Mr. Bungle comrades Trey Spruance (guitar\/vocals), Trevor Dunn (bass\/vocals), and Danny Heifetz (drums). If there are any remaining who think that the musicians in Mr. Bungle are just a vehicle for vocalist Mike Patton’s singing talents, Secret Chiefs 3 is the ultimate proof that this is not the case. Trey Spruance gets a chance to be the leader, as he wrote every track on their 1996 debut First Grand Constitution and Bylaws, and was the record’s producer as well.
Before the full-length debut appeared, the group whet their fans’ appetites by including a Secret Chiefs 3 single with vinyl copies of Mr. Bungle’s 1995 magnum opus, Disco Volante, as well as recording a warped version of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” for a Japanese Christmas compilation. They were also signed on to contribute a Beach Boys track to a Japanese Beach Boys tribute album, showing that they can tackle just about any musical form put in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
