Architek Percussion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Architek Percussion, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des pianistes Pamela Reimer et Daniel A\u00f1ez, propose une exp\u00e9rience de concert unique, d\u00e9finie par la juxtaposition de nuances subtiles et de vagues sonores puissantes. Deux \u0153uvres d\u2019envergure au programme: Angel\u2019s Share (2020) d\u2019Andrea Young, une \u0153uvre m\u00e9ditative pour quatuor \u00e0 percussion, explore l\u2019univers complexe et \u00e9volutif des ar\u00f4mes du scotch, en s\u2019inspirant de trois whiskys single malt rares de la distillerie Ardbeg. L\u2019exploration par Young de timbres profonds, de masses sonores denses et de la m\u00e9lancolie envo\u00fbtante des scies musicales invite le public \u00e0 une exp\u00e9rience de synesth\u00e9sie sensorielle entre le go\u00fbt et l\u2019ou\u00efe. Architek Percussion s\u2019associe ensuite aux pianistes montr\u00e9alais Pamela Reimer et Daniel A\u00f1ez pour pr\u00e9senter une interpr\u00e9tation de l\u2019\u0153uvre minimaliste s\u00e9minale de Julius Eastman, Gay Guerrilla. Cette performance contribue \u00e0 r\u00e9affirmer la place d\u2019Eastman comme l\u2019un des compositeurs les plus novateurs de son \u00e9poque, un statut qui lui fut initialement d\u00e9ni\u00e9 en raison de sa race et de son orientation sexuelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Architek Percussion, alongside pianists Pamela Reimer and Daniel A\u00f1ez, presents two works by Andrea Young and Julius Eastman. A unique concert experience characterized by the juxtaposition of subtle nuances and powerful sound waves. Two major works are on the program: Angel\u2019s Share (2020) by Andrea Young, a meditative work for percussion quartet, explores the complex and evolving universe of scotch aromas, inspired by three rare single malt whiskies from the Ardbeg distillery. Young\u2019s exploration of deep timbres, dense sound masses, and the haunting melancholy of musical saws invites the audience to a sensory synaesthetic experience between taste and hearing. Architek Percussion then joins Montreal pianists Pamela Reimer and Daniel A\u00f1ez for a performance of Julius Eastman\u2019s seminal minimalist work, Gay Guerrilla. This performance helps to reaffirm Eastman\u2019s place as one of the most innovative composers of his time, a status that was initially denied to him because of his race and sexual orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julius Eastman was an openly queer African- American composer, pianist and vocalist, who was an early augur of post-minimalism. While his work received considerable acclaim (his compositions presaged the later work of Arthur Russell and Rhys Chatham, and his recording of Peter Maxwell Davies\u2019\u00a0Songs for a Mad King\u00a0is considered a classic) he was systematically excluded from all but the most precarious of employment and died homeless in 1990. His death was not reported until eight months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Holy Presence of Joan D\u2019Arc\u00a0was originally premiered at the Kitchen in 1981, but the score was lost, and all that remained was an archival recording which composer Clarice Jensen used to painstakingly construct a transcription.,\u00a0In this video recording, cellist Amahl Arulanandam performs all\u00a0The Holy Presence of Joan D\u2019Arc\u2019s\u00a0ten cello parts in split screen format \u2013 a virtuoso feat which involved recording and synchronizing more than three hours of video footage!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amahl Arulanandam\u00a0is a Toronto-based cellist known for his musical versatility and ability to adapt to many different genres ranging from baroque to death metal. Feeling at home in studios, small clubs, and large concert-halls, Amahl is known as a strong advocate for the music of our time, performing with ensembles such as Soundstreams, New Music Concerts, Tapestry Opera and Esprit Orchestra, as well as regular appearances at the 21C Music Festival. He has had the opportunity to work closely with leading composers such as Salvatore Sciarrino, Marco Stroppa, Ana Sokolovic, Luna Pearl Woolf, and Brian Current. As a soloist and chamber musician, Amahl has presented several recitals and performed alongside artists such as David Geringas, Robert Aitken, Steven Dann, Angela Cheng, and Jeffrey Beecher. He toured the US with Matt Haimovitz\u2019s all-cello ensemble, Uccello, and was a featured artist at the Salzburg Chamber Music Festival and Ottawa Chamberfest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
