Jane Penny<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Co-fond\u00e9 par Jane Penny et son ami d\u2019enfance, David Carriere, \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al en 2011, TOPS a \u00e9merg\u00e9 de la m\u00eame sc\u00e8ne DIY locale que Grimes et Mac DeMarco. Le groupe s\u2019est rapidement retrouv\u00e9 \u00e0 faire des tourn\u00e9es et des spectacles \u00e0 guichets ferm\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle internationale, \u00e0 recevoir des \u00e9loges, \u00e0 obtenir des places dans des festivals convoit\u00e9s et \u00e0 accumuler des millions de streams. Le groupe venait de sortir son quatri\u00e8me album studio lorsque Penny est tomb\u00e9e malade, souffrant d\u2019une COVID longue pendant plus d\u2019un an, alors qu\u2019elle s\u2019occupait de son partenaire \u00e0 Berlin, qui \u00e9tait lui-m\u00eame alit\u00e9. Inspir\u00e9e par la sc\u00e8ne musicale berlinoise, s\u00e9par\u00e9e par la distance et les fuseaux horaires de ses collaborateur\u00b7ices habituel\u00b7les \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, Penny s\u2019est mise \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper une pratique cr\u00e9ative ind\u00e9pendante. Lorsqu\u2019elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 suffisamment r\u00e9tablie pour retourner \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, Penny a mis la touche finale \u00e0 l\u2019EP avec son voisin et collaborateur de longue date, le producteur et musicien Patrick Holland, qui a assur\u00e9 la production et le mixage de l\u2019EP. \u00ab\u2009Il y a des choses que je voulais explorer sur le plan sonore et cr\u00e9atif, qui auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 impossibles dans le contexte de TOPS. Je voulais relever le d\u00e9fi de cr\u00e9er un monde \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re : \u00e9crire toutes les parties incluant la batterie, choisir chaque \u00e9chantillon, \u00e9crire la ligne de basse. Ayant pris le contr\u00f4le de l\u2019ensemble du monde musical que je cr\u00e9ais, je suis devenue ouverte aux \u00e9motions, \u00e0 la sensualit\u00e9 et \u00e0 l\u2019intuition qui naissent de la solitude. Il m\u2019a fallu un certain temps pour atteindre un point o\u00f9 je me sentais pr\u00eate \u00e0 partager, mais maintenant les portes sont grandes ouvertes et je vais certainement continuer sur cette voie.\u2009\u00bb TOPS est toujours actif \u2014 le groupe travaille actuellement sur un nouvel album. \u00ab\u2009Il n\u2019y a pas de fa\u00e7on plus satisfaisante de faire de la musique que de la jouer avec d\u2019autres personnes, mais le format d\u2019un groupe a certaines limites sur le plan sonore. Faire de la musique avec TOPS reste l\u2019une de mes priorit\u00e9s dans la vie, et le groupe ne souffre absolument pas de mon travail solo.\u2009\u00bb \u00ab\u2009Cet EP est n\u00e9 d\u2019une p\u00e9riode d\u2019obscurit\u00e9 et d\u2019un point de faiblesse, mais je me sens responsable d\u2019infuser les auditeurs d\u2019un certain niveau de r\u00e9silience\u2009\u00bb, d\u00e9clare Penny. \u00ab\u2009En tant qu\u2019artiste, c\u2019est mon travail de montrer aux gens qu\u2019il est lib\u00e9rateur d\u2019explorer certains de ces sentiments, mais je veux toujours leur laisser un rayon de lumi\u00e8re, une porte de sortie \u2014 pour ne pas que je l\u2019oublie moi non plus.\u2009\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Co-founded by Jane Penny and her childhood friend David Carriere in Montreal in 2011, TOPS emerged from the same local DIY scene as the likes of Grimes and Mac DeMarco. The band quickly found themselves touring and selling out shows internationally, earning praise and critical acclaim, scoring highly sought-after festival slots, and racking up streaming numbers in the millions. The band had just released their fourth studio album when Penny became sick herself with long COVID for over a year while acting as a caretaker for her partner in Berlin who had become bedridden. Inspired by the musical scene in Berlin, but also separated by distance and time zones from her usual collaborators in Montreal, it became necessary for Penny to explore an independent creative practice. When she was finally well enough to return to Montreal, Penny put the finishing touches on the EP with her neighbor and long-time collaborator, producer and musician Patrick Holland, who provided additional production and mixing on the EP. \u201cThere are things I wanted to explore sonically and creatively, which would be impossible in the context of TOPS. I wanted to challenge myself to create a whole world of my own, to write all of the parts, program the drums, choose every sample, write the bass line. When I took control over the entire world of music that I was creating I felt that it also opened up a lot of emotional space, sensuality and intuition that comes through solitude. It took a while to reach a point where I feel it\u2019s ready to share, but now the gates are open and I\u2019ll definitely be continuing on this path. \u201c TOPS is still going strong \u2013 they\u2019re currently working on a new record. \u201cThere isn\u2019t a more soul-satisfying way to make music than to play it with other people, but a band format has certain limitations to its scope sonically. Making music with TOPS is still one of my main priorities in life, and the band definitely isn\u2019t taking a back seat to my solo work.\u201c \u201cThis EP comes out of a period of darkness, and a point of weakness, but I feel responsible to leave listeners with a certain level of resilience,\u201d Penny says. \u201cAs an artist, it\u2019s my job to show people that it\u2019s freeing to explore some of these feelings, but I always want to leave them with a ray of light, an escape hatch, because then I\u2019m reminded of it, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ura Star & Fireball Kid<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depuis leur enfance, Ura Star et Fireball Kid font de l’indie pop \u00e0 grand renfort de hooks et de f\u00eates. Tout juste sortis de leurs albums Gas Station, Emotional Bros Hotline et 2024’s Heartracer, ils sont pr\u00eats \u00e0 faire la f\u00eate et \u00e0 faire couler de la bi\u00e8re, dans un esprit de f\u00eate de cuisine, comme jamais auparavant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ura Star & Fireball Kid have been bringing the hook-heavy, party-inducing indie pop together since they were kids. Tissant librement les genres dans des chansons pop \u00e9motives, Elan Noon s\u2019inspire de multi-instrumentistes introspectifs tels qu\u2019Elliott Smith et Judee Sill.
