Fernie est n\u00e9 au Br\u00e9sil, mais a grandi \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 adopt\u00e9 par une famille parlant anglais, portugais, fran\u00e7ais et allemand. Son enfance a \u00e9t\u00e9 p\u00e9nible et ali\u00e9nante, mais Fernie s\u2019est \u00e9vad\u00e9 dans l\u2019\u00e9criture de chansons. \u00c0 20 ans, il avait enregistr\u00e9 ses premi\u00e8res compositions, mais il vivait encore chez sa m\u00e8re, travaillait dans un d\u00e9panneur et songeait \u00e0 abandonner la musique. Puis un soir, dans un party, il a rencontr\u00e9 le producteur Samant (Samaether). Imm\u00e9diatement complice, le duo a entam\u00e9 une fructueuse collaboration musicale, fondant le collectif Kids From The Underground \u00e0 partir de l\u2019Ouest-De- L\u2019\u00cele, et confectionnant Aurora. Fernie est pass\u00e9 de ne plus avoir le go\u00fbt de vivre \u00e0 r\u00eaver d\u2019un avenir meilleur, canalisant son amour de Frank Ocean, d\u2019Adele et des trames sonores de films pour cr\u00e9er un nouveau paysage sonore o\u00f9 s\u2019exprimer.
Apr\u00e8s le succ\u00e8s incroyable de Aurora, Hopeless Dreams pr\u00e9sente un chanteur assez confiant pour revisiter les pires moments de son existence, des traumatismes d\u2019enfance aux relations toxiques. Parfois, comme dans la soyeuse \u00ab Valhalla\u00bb, la voix de Fernie est port\u00e9e par de riches arrangements de cordes soul; ailleurs, comme dans la d\u00e9vastatrice \u00ab Bones & All \u00bb, l\u2019instrumentation est minimaliste. Dans \u00ab Pain\u00bb, on peut entendre le piano et la voix de Patrick Watson, le compatriote montr\u00e9alais qui a d\u00e9couvert Fernie avant la parution d\u2019Aurora et qui est devenu son mentor. Chacun a \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019invit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cial de l\u2019autre lors du Festival d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 de Qu\u00e9bec et de M pour Montr\u00e9al en 2022, et Watson est celui qui a amen\u00e9 Fernie chez Secret City.
Hopeless Dreams est empreint de vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9, mais ce n\u2019est pas \u00ab un appel \u00e0 l\u2019aide \u00bb, pr\u00e9cise Fernie. \u201cThese are my stories, our stories,\u201d Fernie says. Sad stories, hard stories, memories of heartbreak and hurt. In 2021, the musician self-released his breakthrough project, Aurora\u2014propelling him onto global stages, including Osheaga, The Great Escape (UK) and SIM S\u00e3o Paulo (Brazil). Hopeless Dreams is a kind of \u201cprequel\u201d EP, he explains\u2014an A-side to Aurora\u2019s B\u2014exploring where Fernie came from and how those stories changed him.
Fernie was born in Brazil but grew up in Montreal, adopted into a home that spoke English, Portuguese, French and German. It was a difficult and often alienating childhood, yet Fernie found an escape in songwriting. By the time he was 20, he had written and recorded his first tunes, but he was still living at home with his mom, working at a d\u00e9p, and contemplating giving up on art. Finally, at a party one night, Fernie met the producer Samant (Samaether). Their bond was instantaneous: soon they had founded the West Island collective Kids From The Underground, and began crafting Aurora. Fernie had gone from abandoning hope to dreaming of the future, channelling his love of Frank Ocean, Adele and movie soundtracks into a new, expressive sound.
Following on Aurora\u2019s bewildering success, Hopeless Dreams sees the singer ashine with new confidence, revisiting the worst moments of his past\u2014from childhood trauma to extractive relationships. At times, as on the silken \u201cValhalla,\u201d Fernie\u2019s voice is carried by rich, soulful string arrangements; elsewhere, like the devastating \u201cBones & All,\u201d his songs have been stripped nearly bare. \u201cPain\u201d features piano and guest vocals by fellow Montrealer Patrick Watson, who discovered Fernie before Aurora\u2019s release and became a mentor. The two musicians swapped guest appearances at 2022\u2019s Festival d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 de Qu\u00e9bec and M for Montreal, and Watson was the one to introduce him to Secret City.
For all its vulnerability, Hopeless Dreams isn\u2019t \u201ca hand reaching out for help,\u201d Fernie says. This sumptuous record is \u201ca hand reaching out to other people, so they don\u2019t feel alone. That\u2019s universal. That\u2019s for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
