SMCQ: Recital – “Visions cosmiques”

by Roxane Labonté

La Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) presents Visions cosmiques this Sunday, October 25 at 3 pm. Sidereal exploration ahead!

Accustomed to large orchestras, the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ), having to adapt to new public-health measures, explores the form of the recital. The public will be able to hear works from the repertoire for two pianos, played by Brigitte Poulin and Jean Marchand, during the virtual concert Visions cosmiques.

Walter Boudreau, Artistic Director of the SMCQ, explains this artistic choice: “Historically, the repertoire for two pianos was used, among other things, for the reduction of orchestral works or large works for rehearsals, then the form was developed at the request of pianists who appreciated its wide range of possibilities.” The works will be presented by Georges Nicholson, and the concert will be followed by a live exchange with the artists.

On the programme: Visions de l’Amen by Olivier Messiaen, Andante Sostenuto by Denis Gougeon, and Piano Sonata No. 3, op. 67 by Bechara El-Khoury. This last piece, with its poetic character, pays homage to the victims of the recent explosion in Beirut.
